Who am I?
Hello, I'm Tharana Nimsara. I'm a self-taught Python developer based in Galle, Sri Lanka. I'm currently an incoming undergraduate at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, set to start my B.Sc. in Physical Science (ICT) in 2027.
I started coding about 10 months (300+ days) ago. What started as learning basic Python syntax quickly turned into an obsession with building systems. Over this time, I've engineered desktop applications with PySide6, built custom graph traversal engines in pure Python, and wrote Bash scripts for Linux automation.
What is TharanaOS?
TharanaOS is the name I gave to this website. When it came time to build a portfolio, I didn't want to use a generic template or rely on heavy frameworks like React. I wanted the website itself to be a demonstration of my engineering skills.
I built this entirely from scratch using vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Core Architecture & Features
The goal was to create an experience that feels like a modern operating system in a browser. Here are some of the key technical features:
1. The Interactive Terminal
The floating terminal isn't just an image. It's a fully functional CLI. I implemented the Levenshtein distance algorithm so the terminal can do fuzzy matching on commands. If you type abot, it knows you meant about. It also handles conversational inputs like "hello" and "thanks".
2. The Command Palette
Pressing Ctrl + K opens a global search menu, allowing users to navigate the site or toggle the theme without touching the mouse.
3. The Design System
The site uses a custom "Tonal Elevation" design system. The dark mode isn't just black; it uses specific shades of zinc to create physical depth. The "Bento Grid" uses 3D tilt effects and a mouse-tracking spotlight to make the cards feel tactile.
4. The Arcade and Knowledge Base
To keep the site engaging and to share what I learn, I added a mini-arcade (featuring games built with HTML5 Canvas and vanilla JS) and this Knowledge Base to document my technical deep dives.
"This website is a living project. As I learn more about FastAPI, Async SQLAlchemy, and Data Structures, this site will grow with me."
What's Next?
Currently, I'm focusing on Phase 2 of my desktop application (Contact Engine), where I'll be building a FastAPI backend for cloud synchronization. I'm also studying Real Analysis and Data Structures & Algorithms in preparation for university.
